Imagine the chaos that met Elvis every time he entered the stage… hundreds, perhaps thousands of screaming teenagers who pushed against the stage … it must have been like facing a thunderous storm … This great photo shows Elvis backstage in Detroit March 31, 1957 … “Calm Before The Storm”

Elvis 1957 Grand Ole Opry
Elvis 1957 Grand Ole Opry
In December of 1957, Elvis had just received his draft notice the day before he attended the “Grand Ole Opry” with Jordanaire Gordon Stoker. Prior to making his appearance, Elvis visited Colonel Tom Parker and gave him a red Isetta sports car as a Christmas gift. Stoker and Elvis hit the local clothing stores where Elvis purchased a black tuxedo. Elvis spent the night chatting with performers backstage, including Johnny Cash, and made a brief appearance on stage to wave to the audience. Elvis did not perform on this occasion. Elvis only performed on the “Grand Ole Opry” one time in October of 1954. The show did not go over particularly well, with one of the Opry officials reportedly suggesting that Elvis go back to driving a truck.

Hannerl Melcher met Elvis in Las Vegas in November 1957, and visited Graceland at Christmas time with her roommate, Kathy Gabriel, who was 1957’s Miss Ohio at the ‘Miss USA’ contest. Hannerl was Austria’s representative in the ‘Miss Universe’ pageant. Both contests were held July 19 in Long Beach, CA.
Neither girl won their respective titles.
A couple of years later, the lovely Ms. Melcher did nab a bit part in ‘G.I. Blues’ – as the strolling singer during one of Tulsa’s dates with Lili (Juliet Prowse). Hannerl turned 69 this past November.

Little Junior Parker, Elvis Presley, Bobby Blue Bland at the WDIA Goodwill Revue December 6, 1957. When Elvis returned to the WDIA Goodwill Revue on December 6, 1957, a stylish shot of him ‘talking shop’ with Little Junior Parker and Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland appeared in Memphis’s mainstream afternoon paper, ‘The Press-Scimitar’, accompanied by a short feature that made Elvis’ feelings abundantly clear. ‘It was the real thing’, he said, summing up both performance and audience response. ‘Right from the heart’.
Little Junior Parker (1932-1971) was a successful and influential Memphis blues singer and musician. He recorded the song Mystery Train in 1953, two years before Elvis made it one of his classic Sun singles.
