Imagine the chaos that met Elvis every time he entered the stage… hundreds, perhaps thousands of screaming teenagers who pushed against the stage … it must have been like facing a thunderous storm … This great photo shows Elvis backstage in Detroit March 31, 1957 “Calm Before The Storm”

Elvis had his new Cadillac…but ran out of petrol…the people recognized him and surrounded him immediately…the police had to intervene…one of them brought a can of gasoline and “The King” could not start before…but saying goodbye to a little girl who was on board an ambulance.

Elvis fighting his way back to his car in downtown Memphis, 1957. Notice the woman on his left whose hand he’s holding while a toothpick dangles from her lips. Elvis’ way with his fans was unparalleled.

Venetia Stevenson and Elvis Presley: August 8, 1957

Elvis Presley again has a beauteous house guest, this time Venetia Stevenson, Warner starlet.

She was selected from 4,000 contestants in Popular Photography Magazine’s contest for the ‘most photogenic girl in the world’. Ed Sullivan, judge of the contest, had her on his program last Sunday night. She is the daughter of Anna Lee, British actress and Robert Stevenson, director-producer.

Venetia was married briefly to Russ Tamblyn, young actor. Venetia arrived Wednesday night (August 7, 1957) and Elvis met her plane in a white Cadillac, was so excited he drove off without her luggage, but soon returned for it. Last midnight August, with four of his boy friends, Elvis took Venetia to a private showing of his second movie, ‘Loving You’ at the Strand. It was the fourth time Elvis has seen the picture.

The Presley party drove up to the alley entrance behind the theater. Note Elvis’ initials on his shirt. Elvis has had previous young women visitors from Hollywood. A police car escorted Elvis’ black Fleetwood Cadillac when he drove it behind the Strand Theater last night, where the picture was taken’.

            Elvis 1957 Grand Ole Opry

            Elvis 1957 Grand Ole Opry

In December of 1957, Elvis had just received his draft notice the day before he attended the “Grand Ole Opry” with Jordanaire Gordon Stoker. Prior to making his appearance, Elvis visited Colonel Tom Parker and gave him a red Isetta sports car as a Christmas gift. Stoker and Elvis hit the local clothing stores where Elvis purchased a black tuxedo. Elvis spent the night chatting with performers backstage, including Johnny Cash, and made a brief appearance on stage to wave to the audience. Elvis did not perform on this occasion. Elvis only performed on the “Grand Ole Opry” one time in October of 1954. The show did not go over particularly well, with one of the Opry officials reportedly suggesting that Elvis go back to driving a truck.

Hannerl Melcher met Elvis in Las Vegas in November 1957, and visited Graceland at Christmas time with her roommate, Kathy Gabriel, who was 1957’s Miss Ohio at the ‘Miss USA’ contest. Hannerl was Austria’s representative in the ‘Miss Universe’ pageant. Both contests were held July 19 in Long Beach, CA.
Neither girl won their respective titles.

A couple of years later, the lovely Ms. Melcher did nab a bit part in ‘G.I. Blues’ – as the strolling singer during one of Tulsa’s dates with Lili (Juliet Prowse). Hannerl turned 69 this past November.

Little Junior Parker, Elvis Presley, Bobby Blue Bland at the WDIA Goodwill Revue December 6, 1957. When Elvis returned to the WDIA Goodwill Revue on December 6, 1957, a stylish shot of him ‘talking shop’ with Little Junior Parker and Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland appeared in Memphis’s mainstream afternoon paper, ‘The Press-Scimitar’, accompanied by a short feature that made Elvis’ feelings abundantly clear. ‘It was the real thing’, he said, summing up both performance and audience response. ‘Right from the heart’.

Little Junior Parker (1932-1971) was a successful and influential Memphis blues singer and musician. He recorded the song Mystery Train in 1953, two years before Elvis made it one of his classic Sun singles.
