Elvis was mobbed in Los Angeles’ Union Station.Production began on May 2, 1960, and lasted until the end of June. Other working titles for the film included “Cafe Europa” and “Dog Face.” Elvis and Juliet Prowse never went outside of Hollywood for their scenes. Doubles were used for the location shots. A camera crew was sent to Frankfurt while Elvis was still on active army service in Germany, but producer Hal Wallis decided against using his star in case of media criticism.

Info: The reaction of the female members of the Las Vegas audience got wilder and wilder as the season progressed. They started throwing underwear at the stage, no doubt encouraged by Elvis, who, leaning over to the front row, would kiss a fan here, touch a hand there. But sometimes it wasn’t enough. On the photo you can see a female member of the Las Vegas audience running onto the stage just to hug Elvis. It was all good natured fun, though sometimes the level of enthusiasm approached the point of hysteria.Unlike the restrained “supper club” type of audiences at his Las Vegas debut at the New Frontier Hotel back in 1956, the crowds at the 1969 comeback season were redolent of the demonstrative fans he encountered during his touring concerts in the Fifties, screaming at his every gesture, physically moved by his music. When he reached out to them, they reacted as his fans always had, they stretched forwards to touch him, hung on every word he uttered, every lyric he sang. They moved with him, as one.

Info: powerful stage presence in total command of every room he has ever worked. But backstage at the International Hotel on July 31, 1969, Elvis Presley was packing back and forth like a panther. In a few minutes, he would march out into what was then the largest showroom in Las Vegas, holding 2.000 people.
It had been eight years since Elvis had last done a live concert, eight years of recording sessions and movie making, eight years since he had felt the electricity of a packed house. Those of us around him had no doubt he’d be a bigger hit than ever. Deep down probably Elvis knew himself. But at the moment he was sweating through his black mohair suit.
As we started walking to the stage, Elvis became very quiet. You could see in his eyes that he was thinking about the show, going over the song list in mind. His tenseness was contagious. Soon we were all nervous. Comedian Sammy Shore finished his act and the house lights went down. The audience was hushed. The Bobby Morris Orchestra began to play and no further introduction was necessary. Nervous time had turned into Showtime. Elvis was back where he belonged. His concerns, of course, were unnecessary. He performed brilliantly for 90 minutes. He fed off people.
As Elvis came off the stage, he had tears in his eyes and was soaked in sweat, but this was the sweat of a job well done.

Info: This week’s picture is one that was made on the set of Elvis his 26th movie, ‘Stay Away, Joe’. We can see Elvis standing next to his manager, the world famous Colonel Tom Parker. The movie was released in 1968, although shooting took place in October and November of the previous year. For the movie, a Navajo Indian reservation was reconstructed in the foothills near Sedona, Arizona. Elvis arrived there on October 8th 1967, a couple of weeks later, on the 26th, Priscilla and several other wifes & girlfriends will join him there. The Colonel was pretty busy trying to get Elvis some new work, after all… his movie contracts have run out. And around this time he will make a deal with National General Pictures for one movie, a western called ‘Charro’. On the same day shooting was complete for this movie, another one opened nationwide, it was ‘Clambake’.

Info: Of all of Elvis’ passions, Lisa Marie was his singular pride and joy. She was born on February 1, 1968. Elvis called her “Buttonhead” and “Yisa”, and would name his airplane after her. Although Elvis was not one to change the diapers and deal with the day-to-day issues of raising a child, he was a devoted father and spent a lot of time with Lisa Marie. Lisa Marie lived at Graceland until Priscilla and Elvis split up in 1972. Over the next several years, until shortly before Elvis’ death, she would visit him on a regular basis. Lisa Marie is the sole heir to Elvis’ estate.

Info: Lansky, style wise, is where it all began. Elvis frequented Lansky’s when he barely had tow nickels to rub together and remained a loyal client his entire life. Bernard Lansky wisely gave him a house charge early on. Next time you are at the Peabody Hotel down in Memphis, stop by and say hello to the deeply charming (especially to the ladies) proprietor. Note to overly familiar Northerners: Be like EP and call him ‘Mr. Lansky’ no matter how much he protests.

But this photo was taken March 1956, at a haberdashery off Times Square, when EP was shopping with Al Wertheimer. Elvis was in New York for a number of appearances on the Dorsey Stage Show. Our boy was a real big spender because on March 9th, he spent $103 at Lansky’s in Memphis.

Info: About the closing show of this engagement:This closing show was very special; crazy but very good. The lyrics got rather a rough treatment. For example ‘Fever’ got this wording: ‘Myrna Smith and J.D. Sumner had a very mad affair, when their wives and husbands caught them, saw nothing but teeth and hair’.
Elvis has been wheeled on stage lying in a bed, with the microphone at hip level underneath the sheets, pointing straight up…

Later the orchestra begins ‘Suspicious Minds’, while Elvis sings ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’… Elvis also takes the opportunity to have a go at the hotel management which wants to fire one of the employees as soon as Elvis ends the season. The highlight of the show was a new song, ‘Softly As I Leave You’, a beautiful song with very touching lyrics. Elvis holds one hand over his eyes and while the orchestra plays the melody his voice fills the room as Elvis recites the words in an almost freighting dramatic way. Not a dry eye in the house at the end of the song.”
